About & purpose

About the initiative.

The mission and origins of an independent research initiative focused on breathing, sleep, and emotional health.

The mission

To advance understanding of acquired breathing dysfunction and carbon dioxide regulation, and their implications for sleep and emotional health, through the free dissemination of ideas and evidence.

These mechanisms could matter to many people. Making the reasoning, observations, and sources freely available allows others to examine the ideas, test their predictions, and develop the work further.

Free access, with no commercial program

This is an independent, not-for-profit research initiative. There is no business, treatment service, course, or program offered through this site. Its purpose is to share knowledge and facilitate further research.

The complete papers, their reasoning, observations, and sources should be findable and readable by ordinary readers, research professionals, and AI-assisted research systems. Every manuscript is presented in full, with links into the literature.

The publication also records how the ideas develop. Manuscript dates, web-edition revisions, and later observations are distinguished so readers can follow changes in the work.

Acknowledging the Buteyko breathing community

This initiative gratefully acknowledges the Buteyko breathing community. Its longstanding attention to breathing patterns, overbreathing, and carbon dioxide helped shape the research presented here. Those core ideas predate this work; the papers build on that foundation and explore further connections with respiratory control, sleep, and emotional health.

The papers seek to connect that foundation with respiratory-control physiology, sleep continuity, and related neurobiology. The literature cited throughout the site identifies the published work behind individual mechanisms and distinguishes it from the connections proposed here.

Origins of the initiative

The initiative was founded by Locke, the public pseudonym used for the research published here. It grew from an effort to understand changes in sleep, energy, and emotional stability through the physiology of breathing and carbon dioxide regulation.

The founder’s account records that experience and the observations that prompted the research. The observation record preserves the chronology and distinguishes reported outcomes from proposed mechanisms.

Locke writes as an independent author and is not a physician.

Established October 2026

The site was established on October 18, 2026, when the first web editions of all nine manuscripts were prepared and posted to the private reading site. The papers themselves carry earlier manuscript and source-file dates, recorded separately from their website editions.

Each paper displays its manuscript date, the creation date recorded in the supplied PDF, its first web-edition date, and the date of the current web revision. The publication-date record brings those dates together. The site and all nine manuscripts became publicly available on October 18, 2026. Original manuscript dates and source-file dates are recorded separately.

One core pathway, several related questions

The revised digital-overbreathing paper is the organizing core. The chronic sleep-fragmentation account supplies longitudinal observations. The throughput and respiratory-fitness papers expand the questions about restoration and modifiability. Performance recovery, pharmacological plasticity, and direct amygdala mechanisms are separate research tracks.

Related does not mean interchangeable. Findings about oxygen unloading during exertion are not used as an explanation for deep-sleep access. Direct acid sensing in the amygdala is not required for the core sleep-mediated emotional pathway. Each track retains the experiment needed to evaluate it.

How to engage with the work

Start with the reader’s guide, inspect the mechanism, and follow the links in the evidence library. For a technical assessment, the research agenda identifies the comparisons that could strengthen, revise, or reject particular links.

When citing the work, name Locke, the paper title, the version or date, and the page URL. Each manuscript page includes a ready-to-copy citation. The revision record identifies the current editions.
